Sompasauna is a wood-burning self-service public sauna, built and maintained by a group of volunteers in Helsinki. Visitors enjoy the sauna and swim in the sea at their own risk; there is no lifeguard or staff on-site. The sauna is open around the clock and free for everyone to use. Visitors bring their own towel (swimsuit optional) and sauna beverages.
I love the openness in the area. It feels somehow that it is easier to speak with people there. Also, Sompasauna has a lot of foreign travelers enjoying free sauna. Please, see the instructions to go there. The location has changed.
I thought hard about keeping this spot a secret. It is not for everyone, but for those that understand its beauty, it is the bomb. If you end up going there (and find it up and running), bring a towel and swimming suit, be respectful of others, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS close the door when leaving the sauna (quickly) and NEVER EVER EVER litter, or behave disrespectfully towards the other people. If you're not into it, you don't have to be there.
